Shopify rankings dropped after installing an app — how to diagnose and recover

A newly installed app changed your SEO fields, injected schema, or altered handles, and your rankings slid. Because Shopify has no version history for SEO fields, it's hard to even see what changed.

Step by step

  1. List apps installed in the days before the drop and check what each one is allowed to edit (titles, descriptions, alt-text, redirects, schema).
  2. Diff your current meta titles/descriptions against an older crawl or a Search Console snapshot to spot silent overwrites.
  3. Pause the suspected app and restore the affected SEO fields from a pre-change snapshot if you have one.
  4. Run daily SEO-field snapshots with bulk-change alerts so the next regression is caught in minutes, with the likely app named.
